Only So Many Unicorns Available

In a recent conversation with a wonderful career counselor, Adrienne Posner, I asked her why does it seem that so many employers have so many expectations in their job descriptions that make it impossible for a job seeker (me) to perceive themselves as even being remotely qualified?

Why do they do this?

Adrienne responded that “they are looking for unicorns and there are only so many unicorns available…”

That excellent response turned a creative wheel in my imagination and the following result, available below, was authored a few days later.

The creative process, for me, often begins with a single word. Maybe I see this word written. Maybe I hear it spoken. However the means of reception, I then see and hear the word in my mind’s eye. In mind’s eye the word(s) evolves into sentence, a sequence which I speak out loud so as to hear the musicality of the cohesion of the words becoming a sentence.

I try not to waste words or to speak in vain as any one word or sequence of words can transform themselves from the mundane to something wonderful. Words matter.

Sometimes ideas (made of and dependent upon words) are there and just need to be captured and committed to a distinct form so as not to escape. Other times ideas take a long time to germinate as the words necessary have yet to reveal themselves. Ideas (and words) are organic things. They require care and thought and attention. And once fully grown they are beautiful to behold.

Words are wonderful things. As are ideas.

Thank you, Adrienne, for your choice of words in your response to my question.

They were not spoken in vain.

They did not go to waste.

I have put them to use and given them purpose in a distinct form.

The following creative ditty appeared a few days ago as idea and once caught, nurtured and completed it needed only minor revisions and extensions.

I am proud of this one.

Only So Many Unicorns

There are only so many unicorns
The rarest and most majestic of all beasts
Difficult to catch
Difficult to keep
Unique to exist
Immune to time
A wonder to behold.

If only I was a unicorn
The rarest and most majestic of all beasts
Difficult to catch
Difficult to keep
Unique to exist
Immune to time
A wonder to behold.

There are only so many unicorns
To be caught
To be kept
To exist
To produce
To be marveled at
And how many are waiting to escape
Aware of time
The illusion of wonder.

I am but a person
Uncertain
Optimistic
Fearful
Hopeful
Faithful
Subject to time
Limited
Imaginative
Full of wonder
Aware that I matter
(that we all matter)
Even in the smallest of ways.
